Moving to Glasgow to study? Choosing the perfect place to live will be high on your list of priorities. In this guide, you'll find everything you need to find the best flat in Glasgow as a student.
Hillhead
Hillhead is the heart of university life in Glasgow. The area encompasses the main campus, so if you live here, you'll never be more than a 5-minute walk from lectures. Most student housing is located between Bank Street (near the Glasgow University Union), Byres Road, and Great Western Road. The Hillhead subway station on Byres Road connects them. Due to its proximity to main buildings such as the Boyd Orr and Adam Smith buildings, Hillhead is where most of the university's undergraduate students live. Hillhead is home to many attractive but affordable bars and restaurants, charity stores, retailers, and even a Nando's!
Woodlands
Woodlands is a leafy suburb in the West End of Glasgow. It's located between the university campus and the city center, so the morning walk never takes more than 10-15 minutes. The area is popular with postgraduates and student teachers (as the St. Andrew's building is nearby) and is connected by Kelvinbridge and St. George's Cross tube stations. As its name suggests, Woodlands is surrounded by parks and green spaces: Kelvingrove Park and the Kelvin Walkway (which connects to the Botanic Gardens) line the streets lined with Georgian trees. It's the perfect location for those looking for a little more peace and quiet without sacrificing access to campus and the city.
Partick and Dowanhill
Dowanhill is located west of Byres Road and is a popular residential area with students. The large brownstone row houses are best suited for students living in large groups, but it's also a 10-minute walk to the main campus, so there are plenty of students living here. The area is integrated into Partick by Dunbarton Road to the south, which is home to numerous restaurants, international supermarkets, and boutiques. Partick is a well-connected and affordable area with Partick train station (next to a Tesco, Morrisons, AND Lidl - so you'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to weekly shopping!) and the subway, as well as the Kelvinhall subway on Dunbarton Road. It's a bit further from the main campus (up to a 25-30 minute walk), but it's the perfect location for anyone looking for a lively and exciting neighborhood without breaking the budget.
Townhead and St. Mungo's
Townhead is a lively and central location that includes the University of Strathclyde campus and the St. Mungo's neighborhood - a part of Glasgow rich in cultural history. It's a popular area for students to live, with many private Student Accommodation Glasgow, and is within walking distance of Buchanan Street Bus Station, Buchanan Street Underground, and Queen Street Station. It's an ideal location for those looking for a central location without sacrificing a homey feel.
Sauchiehall Street
Sauchiehall Street is the gateway to the city center from the West End and is filled with bars, restaurants, stores, and supermarkets. Although it's very central, the apartments on offer are
spacious and affordable, making it popular with second and third-year students in both Strathclyde and Glasgow. The Strathclyde campus is a 5 to 10-minute walk away, and Buchanan Street provides access to the rest of the city center, where Queen Street and Central stations are also located.
